The Death of Average
Updated: 1 day ago
Morning, Beasts.
Name's Richard. I fix things for fun, fish whenever the tide allows, and coach with the crew here at SalesBEAST. If you've been around a while, you know Jayne and I take turns showing up on Monday mornings. If you're new, welcome, my friend. Pull up a seat. We're going to a funeral today.
Average is the real enemy
Not failure. Not rejection. Not the people who doubt you. Average.
Average is the voice that whispers, "This is good enough." Average is the slow leak that drains potential one drop at a time. Average is the cage most people decorate and call home.
But let's set the record straight. You weren't born for average.
The lie of good enough
The world hands you a script. Get a steady job. Hit your number. Collect the check. Keep your head down. Coast to the finish.
That's the trap. Good enough isn't success. Good enough is a coffin with air holes. You're still breathing, but you stopped living.
Why average is dangerous
Average doesn't sound dangerous. It sounds safe. Stable. Comfortable. That's exactly why it's lethal.
Average doesn't sink you fast. It's like a hull with a pinhole leak. One excuse at a time. One "tomorrow" at a time. One skipped call, one half assed effort, one safe decision at a time. Then one day you look down and the bilge is full, and you realize your fire is gone.
I've had a boat do exactly that on me. Ignored a little drip for a whole season because it was "fine." It was not fine. Lesson learned the hard way.
The arena doesn't reward average
The sales arena doesn't hand out trophies for blending in. Average closes the small deals and fades into the background. The Beast takes the call everyone else avoids. The Beast swings while average sits.
Average waits for opportunity. The Beast creates it.
Average blames the market. The Beast adapts and finds a way.
Average asks for permission. The Beast takes initiative.
Average sees rejection as failure. The Beast sees rejection as proof they're still in the fight.
Which one are you?
The weight of greatness
Don't get me wrong. Killing average isn't easy. Greatness is heavy. It asks for early mornings, focused afternoons, and the discipline to do the boring work nobody claps for. That's why most people cling to average. It doesn't ask anything of you.
But average never crowns you. Greatness does. And greatness only shows up when average is gone.
Hold the funeral this week
Here's your homework, step by step:
Write the eulogy. On a sheet of paper, list three habits of your average self. The snooze button. The scrolling instead of dialing. The safe number you pretend is good enough.
Pronounce each one dead. Next to each habit, write its replacement. Alarm across the room. Phone in a drawer during call blocks. A target that scares you a little.
Bury the paper. Literally, toss it, shred it, whatever works. Make it a moment.
Set one daily non negotiable. One action you'll take every day this week, no matter what.
Recruit a witness. Tell someone what you buried so they can call you on it.
Check for resurrection Friday. Did average sneak back in? Bury it again. Repeat as needed.
Jayne, who is the steadiest coach I know, has a quieter way of saying all this: "Average isn't a person. It's a habit. Change the habit." Leave it to her to make my funeral speech make sense. She'll also remind me forever that I once brought a fishing rod to a team planning session "just in case." I stand by it.
I will not be average. I will not be safe. I will not be soft. I was built to grow, built to compete, built to win.
When people look back on your life, they won't remember the times you played it safe. They'll remember the fights you showed up for and the things you built with fire in your heart. That's not average. That's Beast.
Before you go
If you're ready to bury average, tap the heart. Share this with the friend who's too talented to settle for "good enough." And follow SalesBEAST so you never miss a Monday from me or Jayne.
